GARDEN OF THE BIBLE PLANTS

St. Marienthal

Garden of the bible plants

The Bible mentions about 110 plant species. Over 40 of these species are present in the Garden of Bible Plants in St. Marienthal. In the garden courtyard, which covers about 1,030 m², Bible plants are the main focus of the planting. The garden is divided into several theme beds. In the middle are beds with crocus lawn. A water gardenwith a rock fountain, a raised terrace with herb lawn and vines provide additional contrasts. The Garden of Bible Plantsis also a garden for the sensory organs. The scents of flowers, the splashing of water and the twittering of birds can be experienced just as much as the warmth of the rocks in the sun.

The idea to create such a garden came from two young women who were completing a voluntary ecological year at the International Meeting Centre St. Marienthal. They planned a special “meeting place” on the site of the former pig run.

The Garden of Bible Plants was laid out in 1998 and 1999 by long-term unemployed women as part of a job creation scheme. Nature lovers can learn about the Bible here and visitors interested in Christianity can learn about the trees, bushes and plants from the time of the Bible. In this respect the garden is also an environmental and educational garden. On large boards there are the respective Bible quotations about the plants to be found in the Garden of Bible Plants. Inwinter, the frost-sensitive potted plants (e.g. fig tree, oleander, palm and olive tree) are taken to an orangery to spend the winter there without frost.

The garden of biblical plants is also used by individual guests or groups to enjoy the peace and quiet there. For this purpose, the eastern part of the garden offers numerous covered seating areas and tables, inviting you to linger and enjoy the peace and quiet. There you can also barbecue or make a fire in a fire bowl. The facility was financially supported by the Federal Labour Office and the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (Osnabrück).
